I am a student at the Winchester School of Art studying Graphic arts.
This blog holds a collection of my work from photography and graphic arts as well as other artists that have inspired me.
The Social Publisher Final-
A photographic documentary of self-publishing culture exploring the community within contemporary society.
Interviews with some of the most prolific and innovative makers on the scene.
The Social Publisher-
Its been quite some time now since I started my project and its come on in leads and bounds. Recently did a talk regarding my reflective journal and book at USURP Zine fair which was great fun and got up quite a discussion. I have also finally reaching the end of my FMP with only minor changes and adjustments to make.
These photos are not of the final book but shots of a test print taken for the program of the degree show. However the final book would not change much.
Layout V2-
I feel I have now finished the layout my content at present which has reached a comfortable 40 pages of 11inch by 14inch. I will at 4 more pages to space out the content and may repaginate. I am happy with my current layout and will be proof printing a small copy this week to see quality.
I have gotten a great response from everyone I’ve spoken to and had some great interviews. I am looking forward to seeing the proof print to really show me the quality of the document on newsprint.
Forgive the rather large amount of grain on the black and white images, InDesign seems to be rendering the images very poorly. I am now waiting for a tutorial to really see what the tutors think.
The Social Publisher-
The Social Publisher: A Photographic Documentary of Self-Publishing Culture explores the self-publishing culture in contemporary society. With a focus on Zines and the community behind them. Looking at the zine maker, why they choose to self-publish and the unique community involved, the publication features a variety of interviews, information graphics, articles and work from current zine makers.
Exploring the theme in its own design, the publication will be in the form of a zine, having a set of defined rules, the publication will be published in newsprint to become ephemeral. The publication reflects the semi-permeant nature of the makers, fairs and the culture.
This is currently still in development and I have some way to go.
48 The Art Weekend-
I have been shortlisted to create the identity for an art weekend hosted by Chapel Arts Studios in Andover. I have branded the event 48 due to the two day span, using triangle and circle to create a secondary logo. This originally meant hour however that meaning has since become obsolete, however the meaning still stands if anyone ever wondered what it represented. The secondary logo forms now form a grilla campaign of which can be placed in random locations removed from the primary logo. As it will form a grill a element I have asked the public and artists to contribute to the event by drawing, painting, building, etc their own version of the logo form they seem fitting. This brings public interaction with the event even if they didn’t attend. This can be taken to schools and even gone to the extreme if artists decide to create a substantial piece.
The logo is still being developed but I feel happy with it so far and intend to finish the website design and create a small event program for the weekend. This will be printed in newsprint once I get the go ahead and design it.
Exhibition-
I had an exhibition of one of my works some time ago. I decided to exhibit this piece as I felt it reflected what I love about Brutalist architecture. It works well at near A3 scale.
The Waitress-
This is my response to the ISTD tales to change the word brief. The brief was to reinvent the book using the idea of how flexible and versatile magazines and e-books are.
After studying the fairy tale The Waitress by Jack Zipes, using Zipes’ and Fraud’s studies I deciphered and interpreted that the chair stuck on Marie’s back was none other than simple an aliterate personality adding some excitement into her tedious life.
The idea of the book is to bring people together through discussion, like in tale. The reader will read the book, write their opinions then pass it on. Using Bookcrossing the reader is able to keep a track of their book and continue their discussions online with fellow readers. I made the book out of newspaper for two reasons, one it provides a cheaper materials that will encourage the reader to deface it and more importantly to represent Marie’s fragile body. The paper represent how fragile Marie is and how she carries all these discussions on her back bring people together and expense to herself, eventually disappearing without even a thank you.
This book is designed to self destruct due to how overwhelmed it will become with discussion. Like all magazines and digital media, they have short shelf lives or no physical form so the user becomes careless over it and is less precious.
The book will originally come in a box posted to the first person. This box will hold two copies, having two would encourage one to be defaced and passed on, though they can pass both on.
1983-
I have been meaning to photograph this for some time. These are two menus for my genius loci project set in the victorian rose garden in Winchester. They are based off my findings of how the garden looks victorian but was however made in the 1980’s.
As the garden changes from day to night due to the connecting door being closed on one of the walls the walk way becomes a dark closed off space. The mobile restaurant therefore becomes a small coffee stall doing the day then a small dining bar at night. The two typefaces also reflect this. The strong colours and gate fold menu also reflect a 1980’s style.
OUTside INdia-
I have finally got round to photographing my 3d objects. This is an example of how the coloured chapter title pages work within my book. Every page throughout will have a cut triangle that will add a splash of colour to every page and denote the chapter the reader is on.
